Last year my girlfriend and I decided to not renew our lease in our current apartment and change up our living situation. Twelve months later, our four big necessities in our new abode include: overall price, proximity to a Max station, atmosphere of the community, and most importantly, if they allow our two pups, Odin and Marley. As the hunt continued, I was fortunate to make a great find in a community in Hillsboro called The Commons at Creekside. Pulling onto the property, I was greeted by large trees in a wooded setting that quickly made me forget I was just on E. Main Street. I was greeted by Kristina, one of the leasing specialists on the property, and she walked me through what The Commons at Creekside was all about.
Once Kristina knew that two dogs would be coming along with Rebecca and I, the conversation shifted from apartment hunting to our mutual love of our own dogs. My kind of place. She brought up a trend that I noticed as well since my apartment search began; the challenges of finding apartments that make owning a dog easy rather than a burden. Some rental agreements will charge multiple pet deposits for multiple dogs, bringing your deposit up a few hundred dollars more in some cases. Others limit the sizes of dogs to a maximum of twenty pounds (both my dogs being twenty five and forty pounds, and growing respectively). Ultimately it is the prerogative of the property owner but it is unfortunate for the dog owners who aren’t trying to break the bank and need to put a roof over their pups’ heads.
I consider myself a pretty responsible pet owner. I take my guys in for all the check-ups. They get a lot of exercise and I always have a poop bag on hand. For dogs whose owners maybe aren’t as responsible, Kristina let me know that all dogs on the property get DNA tested just in case. Not only does this help build accountability among all the dog owners, but this also promotes sanitary conditions for our dogs to be able to roam the property safely. On top of that, they maintain the grounds and have pet waste stations throughout the property.
Overall it was a refreshing experience at a property that really had my dogs’ best interest at heart. Kristina assured me that their property charges a flat security deposit for both my dogs and has a fifty pound maximum weight limit; restricting only a few breeds. If you’re in the market for a new place, we’d really suggest you give them a look. The Commons at Creekside is located on 5300 E. Main Street in Hillsboro.
